We’ve all been there before: you’re on the first date, and you run out of things to say. Obviously nobody can expect you to be a walking conversation machine, but for some reason that’s usually left up to the guy. It’s unfortunate, but you just have to learn to roll with it. Instead of sitting there like a dead fish with your mouth open, try out any of these three conversation starters that are guaranteed to spark things back up and keep them going for the rest of the date.
“Have You Seen This Movie?”
When in doubt, ask about pop culture. Most people have seen all the popular movies or at least heard of them, so it’s a pretty good place to find some common ground. Ask her about your favorite movie, about a really popular movie, or any other movie you can think of. Try not to pick one that has had a lot of controversy around it to prevent accidentally offending her, but if you pick the right film she’ll be all over that. Talk back and forth about characters, plot, plot holes, the way it was filmed, and anything else you can think of. Talking about something she’s familiar with will help her feel more comfortable around you and will really get her to open up to you. It’s even better if you choose a movie based on a book, because then you can just go right into this next question to keep the conversation rolling.
“Have You Read This Book?”
Even more than movies, women love talking about the books they’ve read. There are philosophical ideas to discuss surrounding them, talks to be had about the plot and way it was written, and any other manner of details to focus on. She’ll love getting to talk to you about these things and show off her knowledge a little bit, so just keep the conversation focused on her unless she directs a question at you. You’d be surprised at how few men actually gear the conversation towards their date, so she’ll be thrilled that you’re more interested in her than bragging about yourself all night long. It keeps her engaged rather than just sitting in silence listening to you yammer on.
“How Do You Feel About (Blank)?”
First off, remember not to bring anything political into the conversation on the first date. Politics and religion should be avoided at any costs, but you can still ask her how she feels about other things. For one thing, you can get a feel for her interests by asking these kinds of questions. You can even get into things like what she studied in school or how she feels about certain pets, which can be good information to know. It’s another good way to feel out how she would be as a long-term girlfriend or eventual wife. You might end up not being interested when you talk to her and she hates cleaning and doesn’t know how to cook, or that could be just fine with you.
